Become a Young Audiences Teaching Artist

We want artists who…

  • are committed to inspiring the imaginations of young people
  • know the craft of their art forms deeply, through study and experience, and have their own dynamic artistic practices
  • bring young people into the world of their art forms, and embolden them to explore
  • see themselves as learners and teachers, and seek out opportunities for growth
  • show a willingness to collaborate
  • have experience with, and strategies for, working with the complexities and challenges of school environments
  • are based in the Portland metropolitan area
  • We welcome applications from residency and performing artists in all disciplines. We are especially looking for artists who teach residencies that explore ceramic murals, Mexican folkloric dance, photography, and metal arts. Our programs are based in a 10-county area in Oregon and SW Washington. Schools (especially elementary schools) are the largest populations served, and some programming takes place in community settings. Some of our roster artists also choose to become arts providers for the Right Brain Initiative, through Young Audiences.

Featured Artist: Will Hornyak

Storyteller Will Hornyak.

Storyteller Will Hornyak, 2004 Sunburst Artist of the Year, has been a staple on our artist roster since 1996, and is this week’s featured artist. Hailing from San Carlos, CA, Will now makes his way in the world teaching through Young Audiences and others, performing at events, and sharing his talents with festival and groups including the Portland Storyteller’s Guild. You can catch some of Will’s spooky stories — just in time for Halloween — this Friday and Saturday at Stonehenge Studios.

What is your art practice outside of teaching? I relate strongly to the wandering, itinerant Irish storytellers known as “shanachies.” They were keepers of the old stories, but they were masters of the craft who adapted those stories to suit any occasion. They threaded their way across the landscape, stitching together as they did town and countryside, public house and private hearth. I am an omnivore of traditional stories and am inspired by everything from Mexican folk-tales and Greek myths to Native American legends and Russian fairy-tales. I am half Hungarian and half Irish and have recently developed a number of Irish myths into hour-long performances for adults during the Samhain (Halloween) and St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. I love how stories and storytelling can open the door to work in schools and churches, prisons and pubs and beyond. Continue reading

School has started, Fall is upon us and the weather here in Portland has been magnificent!  I’ve been in Portland for nearly 20 years (yikes!) and this is the best summer weather I’ve ever seen.  Not to jinx things, but when it starts raining, I hope it’s not until November.  And here’s why…

October is when the Fall Run For The Arts happens at area schools.  The nice thing about doing the run this time of year as opposed to spring (mid-March through April) is the weather; runs don’t get rained out as much, if at all.  The drawback is there is a shorter prep time since school has only been back less than a month, whereas in spring, there’s some breathing room in getting it all set up.

The other Run For The Arts thing that happens is the T-Shirt Design Contest. We got off to a late start this year, so we’ve extended the deadline from it’s usual October 31st to November 30th.  Area schools should be receiving entry forms in the mail this week, addressed to Arts Coordinator.

Once we receive all the submissions for the T-Shirt Design Contest (rules here), we review them, then the entire office has an opportunity to select the ones they like.  We have a Winner, a Second Place, a Third Place and usually an Honorable Mention or two.  The winner gets a $350 prize and the chance to work with a professional Graphic Designer to digitize their design!

We welcome applications from residency and performing artists in all disciplines. At this time we are particularly searching for Teaching Artists that specialize in technology based mediums (video/film, graphic design, fashion, culinary arts, animation, etc). Our programs are based in a 10-county area in Oregon and SW Washington. Schools (especially elementary schools) are the largest populations served, and some programming takes place in community settings. Some of our roster artists also choose to become arts providers for the Right Brain Initiative, through Young Audiences.

Performing artists set their own fees; residency/workshop artists have a standard fee per hour for teaching, preparation, and planning. See the Educator’s Guide section of our website for more details. Note that fees listed on artist pages include YA’s 25% administrative and programming fee.

National Average versus Portland Schools

Today in Portland there are nearly 12,000 children attending schools that do not have any art, dance, drama, or music instruction. And the rate of decline for arts education here has been shockingly steep. Portland is home to six school districts and in the last five years, two of them (Parkrose and Centennial) have cut their arts and music teaching staff by half, while our largest (Portland Public Schools) has dropped all arts instruction in 22 schools in just two years.

With the Arts Education and Access Fund, the City of Portland will restore arts education by providing stable, long-term funding for certified teachers for every
elementary school serving Portland residents and support arts organizations citywide to improve access to the arts in every classroom and community.

Run For The Arts Results are In!

Spring here in the Pacific Northwest has been anything but usual.  What with over 14 days of sunny, warm weather in mid May, to the back-to-back thunderstorms over Memorial Day and having reached our average amount of rainfall for June last week, it has indeed been strange.  To cap it all off, our Run For The Arts program exceeded our expectations and set a new record.  Below is the press release going out, and we couldn’t be prouder of the students involved, and the community at large…

Students from The Emerson School take part in the 2012 Spring Run For The Arts

Students from around Oregon and Washington, in conjunction with Young Audiences, have  completed the most successful year ever of The Run For The Arts program by raising $800,000.00 for arts education! Over 20,000 students from 81 different schools were involved in the Run For The Arts, helping to raise the money necessary to keep arts programming in their curriculum.

With school districts forced to make damaging cuts to arts programs, Run For The Arts, a  biannual jogathon held at individual schools, raises essential funds to bring the arts into schools.

The money raised will benefit students with residencies and performances by nearly 200 professional teaching artists; it will benefit teachers with teacher professional development, and will benefit schools with much needed art supplies. This year’s amount represents an almost 8% increase over last year, making the total raised-to-date over $13.5 million since the inception of the Run For The Arts program in 1977.

This year, a total of 81 schools in 14 districts across 6 counties and 2 states were involved. While all participating schools are worthy of praise and recognition, Beverly Cleary, Glencoe, Southwest Charter School and Woodstock elementary schools all had substantial increases in the money they raised from the previous year. Also noteworthy are some newcomers to the program; Franciscan Montessori Earth School in Portland, Mini Mozarts’ Preschool in Vancouver and Reedville Elementary in Aloha.

The Run For The Arts was sponsored by local business leader Oregon Screen Impressions, and participating students were awarded prizes from Northwest Children’s Theater, Oregon Ballet Theatre, Oregon Children’s Theatre, Portland Center Stage and Portland Youth Philharmonic.
