I just have to say it – what a very strange week of weather we’ve had here in Portland. Torrential downpours which turned to snow which then became super dense fog and now sunshine.  That would be Spring in the Pacific Northwest.  But at least the weekend will be nice which leads me to what several of our Roster Artists are up to in the coming weeks…

As I have been reminded by the more “optimistic” people here at the office, it’s Springtime.  Somewhere else, I’m sure.  But here?  Not so much.  Come on!  It’s going to be May this weekend.  MAY!

Since Spring is a little behind schedule this year, why not get a jump on it and be entertained.  Indoors.  Where it’s warm.  And dry.  So very dry.

Once again the weekend has arrived and since it looks like Mother Nature will most likely keep us indoors, YET AGAIN, why not get a dose of entertainment from our Roster Artists:

FROM WILL HORNYAK:

Storyteller Will Hornyak presents:

The First Irishman:  The Story of Tuan Mac Cairill

He came to Ireland long before anyone had set foot upon her emerald earth. He was the first to get a poem from her rivers and the first to hear the music in her wind and waves. Tuan Mac Cairill was the first Irishman and some say he will likely be the last.

When  a fiercely devoted 6th century Irish monk comes to convert a shape-shifting druid to the new religion, their conversation unearths an epic tale and a host of dangerous beliefs. Storyteller Will Hornyak re-tells this elegant and witty Irish myth in which two  holy men embody the opposing spiritual beliefs and cultural traditions that intertwine like a Celtic knot and define Ireland for centuries to come.

About 3 Leg Torso
———————–
“Chamber music for the new millennium” – Music Connection

3 Leg Torso’s fifth album, Animals & Cannibals, was declared “Album of the Year” by the 2011 Portland Music Awards.

3 Leg Torso creates modern chamber pop music infused with the authenticity of folk music, the passion of world music, the precision of chamber music and the enthusiasm of rock & roll. Influenced by tango, Eastern European folk and other world music traditions, their cosmopolitan musical style embraces wit and humor within thoughtful, uncommon and beautiful musical arrangements.

Since the ensemble’s humble start more than 10 years ago with spontaneous street performances — called “Meestering” by co-founders Béla Balogh and Courtney Von Drehle — they have been featured on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered and at the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival, successfully toured the east and west coasts, released five CDs, composed and recorded film and documentary scores, written new evening length works commissioned by the Portland Institute of Contemporary Art (PICA) and performed their original music with several symphony orchestras. The cinematic nature of many of the ensemble’s compositions has paved the way for its inclusion in films by Academy Award winner Joan Gratz, Morgan Spurlock, two-time Oscar nominee Bill Plympton and others.
Founding members Béla Balogh (violin, trumpet) and Courtney Von Drehle (accordion) are joined by Mike Murphy on double bass and percussionists/mallet players Gary Irvine and T.J. Arko.

FROM GIDEON FREUDMANN:

This Month

On Saturday March 12th at 7:30, I will be performing a live soundtrack to accompany Buster Keaton’s 1924 silent film, “Sherlock, Jr.“. The event is at TaborSpace in SE Portland

The last silent film I did here sold out, so come early to get a seat (no advance tickets). I’ve never accompanied this film before. It’s classic Keaton antics with a few surreal touches. Bring the kids.

5441 SE Belmont, Portland, 503-238-3904

More gigs are listed below.

7 in the Afternoon

The 3rd Broque CD, 7 in the Afternoon, is at the pressing plant and will be done later this month. I’ll tell you more about that next time and post sound clips and ordering info on my website. Broque is my duo with guitarist Mark Herschler. We will have a CD release show in Amherst, MA at the end of April. After that we will either tour Europe and Japan or quietly hide away in Dick Cheney’s secret lair. For now we’re waiting to see which option pays better.

Little movie, big splash

The moving short film created for my tune, Denmark, continues to have a life of its own. Most recently is was accepted into the Buffalo Niagara Film Festival, Byron Bay International Film Festival in Australia, SXSW Film Festival in Austin,  2011 International Beverly Hills Film Festival and the SENE Film, Music & Arts Festival.
